The City of Nawabs, Cities hold the secret to their history and culture. Along with every nook and corner, there are stories etched harking tales of heroism, power struggle and art. One of such cities in India with a rich history is Lucknow, The City of Nawabs. Other than the sacred stones of Bada Imambara and ancient monuments, there is history along every dingy lane and brick houses. Bollywood has often shot movies in places with a rich aesthetic and history. Lucknow too has been used as the base for several movies. Let us look at some movies which were shot and revolve around Lucknow.

Gunjan Saxena- The ‘Kargil Girl’ inspired this 2020 movie starring Janhvi Kapoor. The first female pilot in combat, Gunjan Saxena’s biopic is shot in Lucknow for the majority portions.

Bala- Ayushmann Khurrana is known for the out of the box concepts he picks for himself. Bala is no different. In the world revolving on biased beauty standards, people are bound to live in insecurity due to some ‘flaws’ they might possess. A young man with pattern baldness falls in love with a TikTok star from Lucknow, played by Yami Gautam. With enough comedic instances to cushion the blow, important stigmas around beauty have been talked about.

Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana- A tale of romance and drama, the plot for this movie revolves mostly around Lucknow, although the couple is from Allahabad. Kriti Kharbanda as Aarti and Rajkumar Rao as Satyendra have played a perfect role in this saga of love and revenge.

Daawat-e-Ishq- Can a movie make you hungry? Apparently it can! Lucknow which is known for its exquisite cuisine was the location for this movie which revolves around the life of a chef, Tariq played by Aditya Roy Kapur and Gulrez played by Parineeti Chopra. This 2014 Bollywood romance is an easy-going enjoyable movie for lazy days!

Jolly LLB 2- This 2017 movie is about a lawyer Jagdish Mishra based in Lucknow. Another terrific movie that showcases The City of Nawabs. A package of comedy and drama, this movie successfully leaves a heavy impact on the viewers.

Raat Akeli HaiNawazuddin Siddiqui once again won the hearts of the audience after his impressive performance in Mirzapur and Sacred Games. He plays the role of a misfit police officer in Lucknow(the city of nawabs) who needs to uncover the criminal behind the murder of a rich landlord of a haveli. Radhika Apte too left an impression. From dingy lanes to rustic bungalows of Lucknow, it is a perfect example of the beauty of the city.

Gulabo Sitabo- Directed by Shoojit Sircar, this 2020 movie starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Amitabh Bacchan at lead is a comedy-drama based in Lucknow. The scheming tale of the men results in funny and engaging moments throughout the movie. Several shots of Lucknow’s tourist spots(the city of nawabs) and residential areas show the stark contrast between the two.

Umrao Jaan- this 1981 movie is based on a novel named Umrao Jan Ada which is set in Lucknow. The tale of a renowned poetess and courtesan Amiran showcases the cultural value of the city perfectly.

Shatranj Ke Khilari- Set around the time period of the British annexation of Awadh. Munshi Premchand’s brilliant story is about two friends Mirza Ali and Mir Ali who indulges in the game of chess to an extent where they abandon their families for the addiction. Directed by Satyajit Ray, this 1977 movie is a masterpiece.
