Supremely talented performers Radhika Apte and Nawazuddin Siddiqui were paired for the Netflix original thriller Raat Akeli Hai. The story revolves around a dysfunctional family and the murder of its patriarch on his wedding night. It seems everybody or nobody is the killer as the mystery unfolds slowly infront of the investigating officer Jatil (Nawazuddin Siddiqui). Talvar (2015 film)- Based on a real-life double murder case of Noida in 2008, the film follows the investigation from three different perspectives and each of them presents us with shocking twists and witnesses. Though the subject is extremely common, director Meghna Gulzar manages to maintain a suspenseful and tight thriller keeping the audience engaged. It’s currently streaming on Netflix.
  • Ugly (2013 film)- Not suggested for the faint-hearted, this Anurag Kashyap thriller chronicles the story of a struggling actor whose daughter goes missing and suspicion falls upon the girl’s step-father and biological father. Much like Raat Akeli Hai, the investigation brings out unsettling secrets through complicated stages of an investigation. It’s currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
  • Ready or Not (2019 film)- Weddings and murders aren’t quite common but just like the basic plot of Raat Akeli Hai, this film is about a comedy-horror movie where a newlywed Grace’s (played by Samara Weaving) joy of a wedding is short-lived. She soon finds out that she has to survive a gruesome ritual of the wedding night where she is to be hunted and sacrificed to please Satan. It’s currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
  • Murder on the Orient Express (2017 film)- One of the most famous “locked-room” thrillers like Raat Akeli Hai, this movie is the fourth adaptation of a novel by the same name authored by Agatha Christie. The story revolves around a murder on a famous trans-European train of the 1930s, the Orient Express. Fortunately, the renowned detective Hercule Poirot is on board and he’s ready to solve the mystery. It’s currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
  • A Death in the Gunj (2016 film)- Another story of a dysfunctional family and a mysterious death, this directorial debut of actor Konkona Sen Sharma is the story of a sensitive college student who grieves the death of a loved one. When everyone gathers for a family vacation, the trip ends with an unfortunate revelation. It’s currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
  • Drishyam (2015 film)- Hindi remake of a Malayalam movie with the same name, Drishyam is a thriller which is a class apart in Bollywood and completed its 5th anniversary this year. Starrer by Ajay Devgan and Tabu, this film revolves around a thrilling murder mystery and how far can a person go to protect his family. Highly appreciated by critics for the high-class performances by the entire cast, this film packs a powerful twist at the end. It’s currently streaming on Netflix.
