Books by John Green which Bollywood should Remake after Dil Bechara

John Green is an acclaimed American author and many of his books have found their way to silverscreen. 2014 movie The Fault in Our Stars starring Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort and Nat Wolf was a whopping success. On 24th of July the Bollywood adaptation of the same book by John Green was released starring Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjana Sanghi. The movie was released in OTT platform Disney+Hotstar.

The love and appreciation that Dil Bechara got makes us wonder what other John Green books we would like to see on the Bollywood screen!

  • Looking for Alaska- Looking for Alaska is the first novel of John Green. Published in March, this book became a best seller and earned John Green worldwide appreciation. The book revolves around the story of Miles Halter who gets admitted to a boarding school and looking for the meaning of life and ‘Great Perhaps’. He meets a whirlwind of girl, Alaska Young and falls in love with her while she fights her own insecurities and struggles. The young adult novel was loved for its realistic characters, plot and themes. The twist of the books and the bittersweet depth of it is a fresh change to most coming of age novels. Paramount Pictures acquired the movie rights but failed to make the novel into a novel. In 2018, Hulu adapted the novel into a limited 8 episode series starring Kristine Froseth and Charlie Plummer as the leads.
  • Will Grayson Will Grayson- This novel was co-written by David Levithan and John Green and perhaps that makes it even more awesome. This book is the first young adult that stepped into the LGBTQ boundary. The book has a unique structure where both the authors while about two different characters with the same name in the alternative chapter. The structure continues until the characters meet and both the stories emulsify into the same story. The same story is now written from two perspectives. The two Will Graysons are very different in their personalities and sexualities.  This concept is at par with the in-demand content of Bollywood at this moment, especially since Shubh Mangal Zyada Savdhaan was a success.
  • Let It Snow- Again, this book is not John Green’s solo book, instead co-written by Lauren Myracle and Maureen Johnson. A teenage tale of a group of teenagers stuck in a town called Gracetown during Christmas due to a snowstorm. While the three separate collide, the lives of these teenagers to intertwines and everything changes by Christmas morning! A fun, enjoyable romantic story, there is no way it can fail in Bollywood!
  • Paper Towns- This 2008 John Green book too earned appreciation for its enigmatic characters and out of the box plotline. A teenager Margo Roth Spiegelman is angst-ridden and fed up with the ‘paper town’ she lives until the day she ‘gets lost’. The protagonist of the movie Quentin Jacobsen unwinds Margo’s secrets and guarded personality while looking for his lost childhood sweetheart. In 2015, Fox2000 released the Hollywood movie adaptation of the book with Cara Delevingne and Nat Wolff as leads
  • Turtles All the Way Down- John Green claimed this book to be one of the closest to his heart and very personal. The reason behind it could be the OCD and anxiety that is portrayed in its raw form in this book, quite similar to what he himself faced. 16-year-old Aza Holmes is an American high schooler facing bouts of anxiety and OCD. The story revolves around Aza and her best friend searching for a billionaire who was kidnapped. It would be refreshing and very enlightening to see mainstream Bollywood stepping into real issues like mental illness.
