JOKER (2019): REVIEW

Said to be the origin story of the greatest comic book villain of all time, “Joker” is in my opinion, the best comic movie all time.

Director Todd Philips’s masterpiece, it is an American psychological thriller which will etch itself into your mind. The movie tells the story of a failed comedian, Arthur Fleck who slowly descends into insanity due to his harsh life in the decaying Gotham City. In Gotham, crime is the way of life with only the rich and the corrupt unaffected. Arthur suffers from a mental illness, he breaks down into uncontrollable laughter when he suddenly feels a strong emotion.

The movie is dark and depressing, it’s a horror without any scares, it is very disturbing and will make you squirm and be uncomfortable but you won’t be able to take off your eyes. Arthur’s journey uncovers the secrets of his past and slowly breaks down even forgetting the line between what is real and an illusion will make you re-evaluate all your emotions. The plot essential won’t matter to you much as you will be so engrossed in what’s happening in front of you, you will never even get a chance to think,” What might happen next”.

Joker has become the highest-grossing “R-rated film” of all time crossing over $1 billion. It is not for the weak-hearted, but it is a must-watch. The movie wouldn’t be a huge success without Joaquin Phoenix’s marvelous acting, his acting felt so real it was scary. He totally deserved his best actor award at the Academy Awards. The movie is an emotional roller coaster that will actually bring into the film, in the dark world of Gotham where Arthur started a cultural criminal revolution.

For all those who think it will portray the iconic DC villain “Joker”, well Arthur is very different from him but don’t be disappointed, he is much much more. You will perfectly dive into his psyche and understand what madness truly is and how a human is pushed beyond his breaking point which pushes him down the path of a murderer. At the end of the movie, despite all the wrong and atrocious stuff he does, you won’t be able to stop feeling bad for him.

When the movie was about to be released, the United States Army warned people of the potential violence during the screening. The Aurora, Colorado theatre where the 2012 mass shooting happened during the screening of the “The Dark Knight Rises”, refused to show the movie. In conclusion, the movie is in my opinion, the best movie of 2019. It may feel dark and depressing, but the movie is a form of art that is perfect in almost all aspects, a movie which is a must-watch and will take you on an emotional rollercoaster.
