A series of demonstrations across the USA has triggered demanding justice for Floyd.
In a petrifying video that has gone viral on the internet an Afro-American man was seen succumbing to death as a white police officer kept his knee pressed on George Floyd, the victim, neck. According to news reports, the police officers were investigating a forgery case when they came across George Floyd who was identified as a suspect by the cops. The police stated that they considered Floyd to be in mental distress as they found him handcuffed in the car.
Derek Chauvin, Thomas Lane, Tou Thao, and J Alexander Kueng are identified as the four police officers who are involved in this entire incident of police brutality as identified by the city of Minneapolis. The video shot by Darnella Frazier showcases how Derek Chauvin presses his knee against George’s neck as he begs for mercy and complains about feeling short of breath. George could be heard speaking, “I can’t breathe. Please, I need my neck, I can’t breathe, sh**.”
A few moments later, another cop can be heard saying, ‘Get up and get in the car,’ responding to which George could be heard complaining of the pain he is undergoing as he says, ‘I can’t…my neck, I’m through. My stomach hurts, my neck hurts, everything hurts.’ Further, another police officer says ‘this is why you don’t do drugs, kids’ as witnesses in the background pleaded to the officer to let Floyd go.
After four minutes, George goes numb while his neck remains pressed by the police officer. As claimed by the police an ambulance took him to the hospital where he passes away. The police department has fired all the four officers as a follow-up action to conciliate the raging protests
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has stated “If you had done it, or if I had done it, we would be behind bars right now. We watched for five whole excruciating minutes as a white officer firmly pressed his knee into the neck of an unarmed, handcuffed black man.
I saw no threat. I saw nothing that would signal that this kind of force was necessary. By the way, That particular technique that was used is not authorized by the MPD and it should not have been used period.” George Floyd’s cousin in an interview with CNN communicated, “They were supposed to be there to serve and to protect and I didn’t see a single one of them lift a finger to do anything to help while he was begging for his life. Not one of them tried to do anything to help him.
They need to be charged with murder because what they did was murder. And almost the whole world has witnessed that because somebody was gracious enough to record it. They need to pay for what they did.” Philonase Floyd, brother of George told: ‘They could have tased him; they could have maced him. Instead, they put their knee in his neck and just sat on him and then carried on. ‘They treated him worse than they treat animals.’ The entire incident will be investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
Expressing his disgust ‘Enough is enough! What will it take? A civil war? A new president? Violent riots? It’s tired! I’m tired! The country is tired! You don’t put fear in people when you do this you just show how coward YOU ARE! And how America is really not the land of the free! [sic]’ wrote the famous rapper Cardi B. Protests were witnessed in many cities across the USA demanding justice for Floyd, while in some parts, demonstrations turned violent as protesters set parts of a police department building aflame. Shops were also looted signifying resistance against the murder.
