JASLEEN ROYAL: RE-DEFINING THE INDIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY

Most of us often tune in to music to find peace and tranquillity but the Bollywood music industry has failed us quite, lately. Whether it be gibberish remixes or lyrics without any sense. But here is an artist who has almost a perfect voice, eloquent lyrics, and heavenly composition.

While most of you would be scratching your head and recollecting your playlist thinking who it could be, it is our Nachde Ne Sare kudi from Ludhiana, Jasleen Royal.

Jasleen made her first public appearance when she appeared in the auditions of India’s Got Talent in 2009 at a juvenile age of 18. Her ability to play different instruments simultaneously won over the judges instantly. She was one of the semi-finalists in this intensely competitive national talent showcasing platform. Moreover, the fact that she has learned to play instruments with almost negligible formal training left the nation astounded. She earned the title of “one-woman band” from the judges at this completion.

Jasleen began her career as an Indie artist and released her song “Panchi Hojava” which is based on the once despised but now praised poet Late Shiv Kumar Batalvi. In one of her interviews, she had recalled how she had almost used all her savings to rent equipment to shoot the video for this song but it rained the entire day so later on how she shot the video by borrowing a camera from one of her friends. The video is raw and showcases various people holding a blackboard on which they had written their wishes. She was awarded with the Best Indie Music award in 2013 by MTV Video Music Awards India. Her debut song provided her the launching pad for her future prospects as well as entry into the Bollywood music scene.

Royal collaborated with the noted music composer, Swanand Kirkire for her second single, Maye Ni which was based on another poem by Late Shiv Kumar Batalvi.

Jasleen made her debut in Bollywood in September 2014 with the song, Preet from the Sonam Kapoor starrer, Khoobsursat.

Din Shagna Da, a Punjabi wedding folk song, covered by Royal also has become the wedding anthem in India as it became viral after being played at the wedding of Virat Kohli and actress Anushka Sharma.

Her most noteworthy Bollywood songs include Kho Gaye Hum Kahaan and Nachde ne Sahare from Baar Baar Dekho, Love you Zindagi from Dear Zindagi, Laaj Sharam from Veere di Wedding, Jahaan Tu Chala from Gully Boy and Deh Shiva from Kesari.
Jasleen had also covered many English and Hindi songs.

In numerous interviews, she had talked about how she doesn’t believe in number games but rather how she would prefer to continue doing the right music instead of creating noise in the name of music.

She had also stated how her song Kho Gaye Hum Kahan went viral after its release stating that in the long-run art is always appreciated and how she would try to keep her balance instead of getting lost in stardom and numbers.

In a recent interview on being asked which genre she seems to describe her she said that she feels that none of labels would be correct to describe the kind of music she sings and composes describing it as “right music.”

She has also stated that she draws inspiration for the kind of music she produces from the likes of AR Rahman, Amit Trivedi, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Coldplay and Lauv

Her latest song, Nit Nit features her pet dog Kobe in the video. This song deals with the heartbreak she suffers but ends up on s positive note owing to the support from her pet dog.
