1. THE SPY WHO DUMPED ME
Ignore the cumbersome title that makes it sound like one of those awfully scary movie spinoffs, because The Spy Who Dumped Me is a genuinely spectacular, globe-trotting action-comedy that went far too underappreciated when it hit theaters in 2018. It’s not a surprise the movie is funny, Kate McKinnon could read off some Home Depot color swatches and it’d probably be at least a little funny but the action set-pieces are justifiably on par with the fastest and most furious films out there.
2. EIGHTH GRADE
Comedian Bo Burnham‘s feature directorial debut is a legit miracle of a movie, a slice of life piece that pulls moments directly from your most awkward, embarrassing face-palm grade-school cafeteria memories and puts them right up on the screen. And at the front of this hilarious panic attack is Elsie Fisher as vlogger-outcast (Kayla Day) who struggles with anxiety but strives to get social acceptance from her peers.
3. THE BIG SICK
The story follows a standup comic (Nanjiani) who falls for a woman who at first crazily taunts him (Kazan) at a show. He tries to hide the relationship from his parents, who expect a strictly traditional arranged marriage to a Muslim woman, but their romance faces an even greater snag when she falls into an inexplicable coma and he bonds with her parents. Bursting with heart and earnest good nature, The Big Sick is a witty and charming exploration of love, commitment, and family, and it’s a genuine crowd-pleaser to boot.
4. BRITTANY RUNS A MARATHON
Brittany Runs a Marathon is not the movie you think it is, in the very best way. The film star Jillian Bell as an overweight woman who sets out to train for and run the New York marathon as a way to get in shape, which she also believes will change her life for the better. Changes do come, but they’re a mix of positive and negative as Bell’s character learns that her issues are related to who she is as a person rather than how she looks on the outside.
UNDERRATED MOVIES, It’s a surprising, sweet, and frequently hilarious comedy with a dash of romance for good balance. But it’s also genuinely moving, and Bell gives a star-making performance that dexterously navigates both comedic and dramatic phases of this iconic piece of work. Brittany Runs a Marathon isn’t just one of the best comedies of 2019, it’s also one of the best films of the year to mention.
5. YOUNG SHELDON
Sheldon Cooper, a 9-year-old bonafide genius, promoted four grades, struggles to fit in with his nonintellectual family in Texas. The story moreover is slightly on the emotion-provoking side, but is definitely going to keep you and your jaws entertained throughout.
