Because of which 2020 has become the second consecutive year after 2019 to report a low number of sunspots. In very simple words we can say that” Sunspots are areas that appear dark on the surface of the Sun. They appear dark because they are cooler than other parts of the Sun’s surface. The temperature of a sunspot is still very hot though—around 6,500 degrees Fahrenheit.” And the reason why it is cool? It is because they are formed at areas where magnetic fields are particularly strong. These magnetic fields are so strong that they keep some of the heat within the Sun from reaching the surface.
Scientists believe that the number of spots on the sun cycles over time, reaching a peak—the so-called Solar Maximum—every 11 years or so. Some studies indicate that sunspot activity overall has doubled in the last century. The apparent result down here on Earth is that the sun glows brighter by about 0.1 percent now than it did 100 years ago. ” This is a very good sign if the numbers of sunspots are decreasing gradually as if this will continue to decrease then it will lead to the formation of solar minimum. So far this year, the Sun has been blank 76% of the time, a rate surpassed only once before in the Space Age.
Last year, the Sun was blank 77% of the time. Two consecutive years of record-setting spotlessness adds up to a very deep solar minimum.” It is believed by many scientists that sunspots have a very remarkable impact on an overworld climate. It’s playing a very major role in climate change which can ultimately lead to a phenomenon like global warming. It’s one of the major players in changing climatic patterns.
